2012 Home Run Derby

The end of the regular season is near, and as sad as that may be it means the Home Run Derby is coming next Saturday, May 19th. Seal Beach PONY is ending the season on a high note with fun for the whole family, including an activity set and a dunk tank so you (or your player) can get a little back at your coaches while proving your pitching prowess. Great prizes are available for both Derby winners and runners up, as well as being raffled off throughout the day.

Festivities including our raffle (more info below) start following the first games, around 10:00 am, with the Home Run Derby beginning at 11:45.

Shetland Derby – 11:45 to 12:30

$5 for 5 pitches from the Shetland pitching machine
“Home Runs” includes any ball hit in the air that lands past the Field 1 dirt into the grass
If no player is able to hit into the grass, the longest rolling ball wins
All hits must be in Fair territory to count

Pinto Derby – 12:45 to 1:45

$10 for 10 pitches from the pitching machine
“Home Runs” include any ball hit over the Field 1 fence
If no player is able to hit over the fence, the highest number of balls that touch the fence (hit or rolling) wins
All hits must be in Fair territory to count

Mustang Derby – 1:45 to 2:45

$10 for 10 pitches from the pitching machine
“Home Runs” include any ball hit over the Field 1 fence
If no player is able to hit over the fence, the highest number of balls that touch the fence (hit or rolling) wins
All hits must be in Fair territory to count

Moms Derby – 2:45 to 3:45

$10 for 10 pitches from the pitching machine
“Home Runs” include any ball hit over the Field 1 fence
If no “Mom” is able to hit over the fence, the highest number of balls that touch the fence (hit or rolling) wins
All hits must be in Fair territory to count

Dads Derby – 3:45 to 4:45

$10 for 10 pitches from the pitching machine
Only wood bats may be used
“Home Runs” include any ball hit over the Field 1 fence
All hits must be in Fair territory to count

We have 3 raffles for you to choose from!

1^st – Kid’s choice: Prizes include $50 Sports Authority, Quiksilver backpack, hat, and belt, boogie board basket with water guns & more, $50 mlb.com, zpizza for a year, 1hr private baseball lesson, and more!

2^nd – Adult’s choice: Prizes include girls night out at Sababa for 6, $100 Koi restaurant, $50 320 Main, $50 Coach’s, $40 Devynn’s Garden, $50 Sports Authority, one night stay at O’Malley’s Bed & Breakfast, and more!

3^rd – Surfer’s Choice: Customize your own surfboard! 6’ 6”- under. Shaped by Mac Glassing. They are well known shapers used by top pro surfers!

Our 2012 Season has only a couple more weeks of play, but our AllStars are just beginning their work.

The AllStar selection process was difficult this year, consisting of coach nominations and ongoing evaluations rather than one do-or-die tryout day. It was a difficult task, but at the end of the day only 12 players each from Mustang, Pinto, and Shetland teams could be selected. These players will now prepare for tournament play representing our league. If you see them around on Saturday, congratulate them and give them a high five…

Seal Beach PONY and the Orange County Braille Institute Center invite you to our 2^nd annual Beep Ball Game on Saturday, May 12th. Our volunteer Mustang players will have their skills and their senses challenged beginning at 12:45pm at Quiksilver Field 1.

This 2-3 inning game is great fun for the players and families, as well as a great learning experience for all. Come and enjoy it with us!

Dirtbags Night

Seal Beach PONY Day with the Long Beach State Dirtbags is April 15th at 1pm.

Tickets are free to Seal Beach PONY players and their immediate family members only, and must be reserved via the website by Friday, March 30th. Tickets will be available for pickup at Blair Field before the game. Come have a great time with the league watching a college play the game we all love, and don’t forget to wear your Seal Beach jerseys and apparel!

Due to Spring Break, tickets will not be available at the Snack Shack this year.

Coaches’ Classic is March 31st

Spring is here, and what better way to usher in the new season than by watching your favorite coaches battle it out on the big diamond. Come and see if your coaches practice what they preach as they play in Seal Beach PONY’s inaugural Coaches’ Spring Classic softball game, to be held March 31st on Quiksilver Field (Field 1) @ 6:00 PM.

Enjoy a fun-filled evening in support of Seal Beach PONY with the entire family. We’ll have hot dogs and hamburgers on the grill, shave ice, and all your Snack-Shack favorites. The league is kindly asking $5.00 per family to be collected by each Team Parent and Coach volunteer.

Who will be victorious and take home the SB PONY Coaches’ Cup — the Mustang and Tee-Ball coaches, or the Pinto and Shetland team? You’ll have to come and see!

A Message from the President

On behalf of the Board, I’d like to take this opportunity to thank all the parents, players and participants who helped make this year’s Opening Day ceremony one of the best in recent memory! From the Honor Guard presentation and National Anthem (way to go Reilly McMahan!) to the First Pitch, this year’s event set up a great day of baseball. And boy, did those kids look great in their uniforms (special thanks to So Cal Sports!); even better with a little red dirt and blue slushie added to it!

With the exception of a slight timing issue on Field One, the day went by without a hitch. The level of play was exceptional with some exciting baseball! Your commitment to support the league was also evident from the snack shack and SB Baseball gear sales which outpaced previous years’ totals—for that, we thank you! And be sure to pick up more gear for kids, friends and family throughout the season.

As I hoped to articulate during the ceremony, this league can’t exist without the support and commitment of the community–the efforts of you, the parents, cannot be overstated. Ultimately, it is the SB PONY’s mission not only to develop the players, coaches, and the league, but to exemplify the spirit of community through youth baseball. And looking over that field on Saturday morning, I think we are off to a great start in achieving that goal again this year!

I look forward to seeing you at the games this year, and don’t forget our upcoming events: The Spring Coaches’ Classic being held March 31st @ 6:00 pm on Field One (more info to follow); our annual Dirtbag Night, April, 15th @ 1:00 pm; and the Home Run Derby, Saturday, May 19th, when we also hold our 2nd annual Beep Ball game in conjunction with Seal Beach Lion’s and the Orange County Braille Institute.
