A Message from the President

On behalf of the Board, I’d like to take this opportunity to thank all the parents, players and participants who helped make this year’s Opening Day ceremony one of the best in recent memory! From the Honor Guard presentation and National Anthem (way to go Reilly McMahan!) to the First Pitch, this year’s event set up a great day of baseball. And boy, did those kids look great in their uniforms (special thanks to So Cal Sports!); even better with a little red dirt and blue slushie added to it!

With the exception of a slight timing issue on Field One, the day went by without a hitch. The level of play was exceptional with some exciting baseball! Your commitment to support the league was also evident from the snack shack and SB Baseball gear sales which outpaced previous years’ totals—for that, we thank you! And be sure to pick up more gear for kids, friends and family throughout the season.

As I hoped to articulate during the ceremony, this league can’t exist without the support and commitment of the community–the efforts of you, the parents, cannot be overstated. Ultimately, it is the SB PONY’s mission not only to develop the players, coaches, and the league, but to exemplify the spirit of community through youth baseball. And looking over that field on Saturday morning, I think we are off to a great start in achieving that goal again this year!

I look forward to seeing you at the games this year, and don’t forget our upcoming events: The Spring Coaches’ Classic being held March 31st @ 6:00 pm on Field One (more info to follow); our annual Dirtbag Night, April, 15th @ 1:00 pm; and the Home Run Derby, Saturday, May 19th, when we also hold our 2nd annual Beep Ball game in conjunction with Seal Beach Lion’s and the Orange County Braille Institute.

Ever wanted a Major League Baseball stadium named after you? Well, for quite a bit less you can have one of the three Seal Beach PONY Fields named after you instead!

Seal Beach PONY has teamed up with League Sponsor GovDeals.com to present an online auction. The winning bidders will have Field 1, 2, or 3 named for him or her, including a 3′ x 5′ single-sided banner that will hang on the field for the 2012 Season and mentioning at the Opening Ceremonies on February 11th, 2012.

Team Parent Meeting

Team Parents – You’re on deck.

We will be having a Team Parent meeting on Tuesday, January 31st, at Coach’s Sports Grill. Our Team Parent mixer begins at 6:30pm in the back room, and the meeting will start at 7:00pm. Please have your completed team paperwork, including the order form for any additional uniform pieces, if your coach has not already turned this in. Read the Team Parent page for more details on this meeting and other Team Parent announcements.

Prepare for 2012 – UPDATE

As you prepare for the 2012 Season just weeks away, you might consider a warmup at a baseball camp in Los Al. Griffin Baseball will be hosting a camp ~~this Saturday and Sunday~~ on January 28th and 29th from 9am – 12pm. The camp is only $50 for both days, paid on arrival at Los Alamitos High School. Many thanks to all the players and families who came out yesterday morning for our uniform fitting and player assessments. It was so great seeing all of you on the fields; a small taste of great Saturdays to come!

Next Stop – Team Name Selection and Team Formation. Our coaches will be meeting Tuesday evening to pick team names, and will participate in the draft for players in Pinto and Mustang division who are not returning to their 2011 coaches. Practices start the week of the 23rd, so expect to hear from your coach late this week if you haven’t already.

Curious as to how Seal Beach PONY Teams get their names? Confused by the number of Angels and Dodgers banners adorning the backstops?

This year the league has something special planned to make each team unique. Instead of allowing for the same professional teams to play in each division, coaches will be choosing team names by lottery at the ~~Coaches Clinic on Saturday, January 21st~~ Draft Meeting on Saturday, January 14th.

What team will your player be on? You have to be registered to find out! Only 4 days left to log on to SBPony.com and be a part of Baseball by the Beach.

Player Assessments and Uniform Sizing

Player assessments and uniform sizing will take place on Saturday, January 14th, at the McGaugh fields. All players should come between 9am and 12pm to meet with our uniform vendor. You will have the chance to select your jersey size as well as indicate your preferred jersey number. Once your player is assigned to a team, all that information will go to your coach and team parent. You can download the form ahead of time, or fill one out when you get to the field – Uniform Vendor Form

If your Pinto or Mustang player is entering the draft this year, please come to the fields during the following times to be assessed by team coaches:

Pinto: 9:00am to 10:30am
Mustang: 11:00am to 12:00pm

Assessment and Draft

If you will be a coach for the 2012 Season in the Pinto or Mustang division, please note the following information regarding the player assessment and draft process.

Assessment:

Assessments will be held on Saturday, January 14th, at the McGaugh fields
2012 Pinto and Mustang Coaches will assess all players for themselves; scores will not be totaled and averaged
Assessment is for new players, or players who choose not to return to their 2011 season coach during registration

Returning players:

Coaches must choose to accept all returning players from the 2011 season, or none – coaches cannot pick and choose previous players
Players must “opt-in” during registration, requesting to return to their 2011 season coach
Players returning to their 2011 season coach will not be assessed
If two previous coaches join as Head/Assistant Coach for the 2012 season and have too many returning players between them, they must decide to take only the Head Coach’s returning players or to split back into two teams

Draft:

Draft will be held on Tuesday, January 17th (location to be determined)
Coaches’ order in the draft will be decided by lottery
Coaches with returning players will not choose additional players until all other teams have the same number of players

E.g. – A coach with 7 returning players will not choose until the 8th round
